Overview of Injection Molding Machines

Injection Molding Machines

What are Injection Molding Machines?

Injection molding machines, also known as injection molders or injectors, are the primary equipment for injection molding. They use plastic molds to mold thermoplastic or thermosetting plastics into various shapes. Injection molding machines are widely used in multiple fields, including mechanical parts, the defense industry, telecommunications, transportation, instrumentation, electronics, electrical, aviation, construction, agriculture, medicine, and everyday life.

The working principle of an injection molding machine mainly utilizes the thermophysical properties of plastics. The material is added from the hopper into the barrel, heated by heating rings around it to melt it. The melted material is then injected into the mold cavity through the rotation and pushing action of the screw. After a period of pressure holding, cooling, and solidification, the mold opens, and the ejection mechanism ejects the finished product.

Types of Injection Molding Machines

Several injection molding machines exist, categorized into horizontal, vertical, angle, and multi-station rotary based on their structural form.

Types of Injection Molding Machines

Horizontal injection molding machines: This machine’s mold clamping and injection parts are on the same horizontal center line, while its mold opens horizontally. Furthermore, its low profile makes it easy to operate and maintain. Its low center of gravity ensures stable installation. When the products are ejected, they can fall automatically due to gravity, facilitating fully automated operations. This form is currently widely used in the market.

Vertical injection molding machines: They are referred to as such because both the mold clamping section and the injection section are aligned along a single vertical centreline, and the mold opens vertically. This makes them take up less space, have space for easy component insertion, and facilitate mold loading and unloading conveniently, among others. Materials supplied from the hopper can be homogenized more uniformly. However, once they have been molded from these machines, they will not automatically be dropped; hence, someone has to remove them manually, making incorporating automation in its processes challenging. Vertical injection molding machines are recommended for small-scale operations or where shot weight is less than 60 grams per machine shot size, but not on larger or medium-sized models.

Angular injection molding machines: This kind of injection molding machine is applicable for small-size machines because the machine tool’s injection direction and mold parting line are in one place, which makes it especially appropriate for manufacturing flat products with no gate marks in the central part. It takes up less space than horizontal injection molding machines; however, inserts put into the mold can tilt and fall.

Multi-Station Rotary Injection Molding Machine: This variant is intended for multi-station working. It uses a mold clamping device with a rotary table structure, where molds rotate around the central axis. It entails an injection unit with a maximal Plasticizing capacity and can reduce production cycle time and output. This type of machine is especially useful in producing large-scale products that require longer cooling and setting or additional auxiliary time for positioning inserts. Nonetheless, because of its bulky build-up and intricate mold clamping system, the machine’s clamping force is usually relatively low, thus making it more frequently used to produce plastic soles, among other similar products.

Generally, China has largely achieved import substitution in mid-to-low-end product lines, so the domestic market share of domestic-made injection molding machines has risen from less than 50% to over 70%. However, the production of high-end injection molding machines requires greater precision and stability. This means that until now there are still some technological bottlenecks for Chinese manufacturers as almost 15% of high-end designs are imported, hence foreign companies dominate in the mid-to-high end market. So there are also many china mold clamp factories to suit with these brands injection molding machines.

Leading domestic brands like Krauss Maffei, Haitian International, Yizumi, and Tederic Machinery dominate the mid-range market. Meanwhile, the mid-to-high-end market is occupied by foreign manufacturers such as ARBURG, ENGEL, Wittmann Battenfeld, and DEMAG.
